FHS 2645-Early Childhood Integrated Curriculum
Integrated Curriculum has always been an interest of mine. I love seeing the connections between subjects and exploring how to best teach them in a realistic and effective way. This class gave me the opportunity to stretch my creative muscles and opened my eyes to the endless connections possible between subjects and content. My favorite assignment was a lengthy one that we worked on throughout the semester in a group. The project was to create an integrated curriculum plan that had a science concept tied into each of the following subject areas: fine arts, language arts, math, physical education, social studies and technology. We worked in groups and had to chose two grades to focus on, one from K-3 and one from 4-6. My group chose 1st and 5th grades. We were required to list the standards and objectives that each activity would accomplish and how the activity related and tied into the other subject. The first part to the assignment was to create a visual web that showed the relationships between subjects.
Then throughout the semester we built a lesson plan for each area, and presented all of them to our whole class as a final presentation. We taught one lesson to our peers and let them experience it as if they were elementary aged students. It was great practice, great fun, and a great source of ideas and inspiration for future lesson plans.
