Long-Term Goals

After completing any program at SLCC, students will be able to:
- Acquire substantive knowledge in the discipline of their choice sufficient for further study, and/or demonstrate competencies required by employers to be hired and succeed in the workplace. I have been acquiring knowledge in the field of education since I graduated high school in 1997. I have attended three different colleges and have maintained a high GPA through all semesters. I attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah from January of 1998 through April of 1999. I left with a 3.53 GPA. Next, I attended American River College in Sacramento, California from August of 2000 to May of 2004. I graduated with an Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts in July of 2003, but continued classes until I left American River College in May of 2004 with a 3.875 GPA. I started attending Salt Lake Community College in August of 2010. I have continued my education with the same attitude and effort as before. Currently I have a 3.77 GPA. I am planning on transferring to the University of Utah in Fall of 2013. Even outside of collegiate studies, I have been actively involved in education. From August of 1999 through April of 2002 I worked as a Para-educator in a High School with multiple and severely handicapped children fully mainstreamed in general education classes. After that I became an educational interpreter for deaf students in two different school districts. I left my interpreting job in May of 2004 when my family decided to move to Utah for better job opportunities. I continued my involvement in education for a short time while working at East High School as an assistant in two classrooms tasked with helping students with behavior and cognitive issues with all school subjects. Even though I have not been employed in the education field since 2005, I have continued my involvement by helping in my children's schools and classrooms. I have participated as a: special guest teacher for sign language modules, room parent, PTA member , and volunteer in many capacities including a Home Reading Library program. If you would like to look at my reflection assignments for my major specific courses you can click on the tab above that says "Coursework" or follow the link provided here. I have a passion for education and believe that all children can learn. I look forward to my future as a teacher with much hope and anticipation.
- Communicate effectively.
Through all of my collegiate studies and personal employment, I have learned how to effectively and properly communicate with students, parents, teachers, administrators, family, and friends. I have taken a communication course as well, and have linked my reflection assignment for that class here. - Develop quantitative literacies necessary for their chosen field of study.
Through the coursework required from my general education and major specific courses, I have learned how to research and apply my findings in order to solve a problem or gain a different perspective on any issue. I have prepared research papers for several of my classes that were very thought provoking and pertinent to me. Some of my favorite courses that have helped me grow and develop the skills necessary to be a great teacher are: Living in a Digital World (CIS 1070), Elements of Effective Communication (COMM 1010), Introduction to Education (EDU 1010), , Introduction to Special Education (EDU 2010), Technology in the Classroom (EDU 2140), Introduction to Multicultural Education (EDU 2150), and Integrated Curriculum (FHS 2645). - Think critically. Many of the assignments I have done for one class have had information useful for another class. For example, in my communications class, I chose to interview a teacher about the pros and cons of being a teacher. It was helpful in honing my interview and communication skills, but it also helped me gain perspective on my future profession. Likewise, in my CIS class, I had the assignment to make a PowerPoint presentation on any topic of my choosing. I chose diversity in America because I thought it might give me further insight into all the different cultures, languages and customs my future students may celebrate and use. There are numerous other examples of this kind of crossover and I know I will continue to see these in my future courses as well.
- Develop the knowledge and skills to be civically engaged, and/or to work with others in a professional and constructive manner. As I stated previously, many of my general education and major specific courses have given me assignments and other opportunities that have helped me learn what being a teacher will require from me personally and professionally. The tools I need in order to be the best teacher possible are being provided in each new course I take. I also have participated in various service learning opportunities in my neighborhood school. Please take the time to visit all of the classes with coursework I have completed thus far so you can really understand the breadth and depth of knowledge I am receiving, and the kinds of service I have provided.
